Initial Final Rule Applying to Vehicles with Automated Driving Systems (ADSs)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is issuing a Final Rule on Occupant Protection for Vehicles with Automated Driving Systems (ADSs). It has not yet been published in the Federal Register (FR), but will become effective 60 days following publication. Petitions for Reconsideration need to be submitted within 45 days of publication in the FR.

On November 18, 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to enable communications between vehicles and a "connected" environment when they ruled they will allow a portion of the 5.9-GHz "Safety Spectrum" long reserved for the transportation sector, to be allocated to unlicensed private usage such as Wi-Fi internet connectivity.
