New Zealand vehicle lighting regulations previously covered by various, different NZ Transport Rules, have now been amalgamated into one new Vehicle Lighting Rule 2004-32005. This lighting document applies to motor vehicles and pedal cycles operating in New Zealand, and covers all lighting lamps including headlamps, brake lamps, direction-indicators, registration-plate illumination, flashing or revolving beacons.

Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004 reviews, updates, consolidates and clarifies vehicle lighting standards such as lighting and lamp application, safety requirements, fitting and performance. It regulates what lighting equipment may or must be fitted to the vehicle, how the lighting equipment must be fitted, how it must be maintained.

For example, all the safety requirements of headlamps such as emitting "a beam of light that is substantially white or amber", orientation of beam, angles of dip, visibility requirements etc are brought together in this one, new document.

This new rule comes into force on 27 February 2005.
