New UN ECE Regulation on Automated Driving Systems Adopted
In a major step towards the future widespread deployment of automated vehicles, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) have adopted a UN ECE Regulation on the Approval of Motor Vehicles with regard to their Automated Driving Systems. This new Regulation, which has provisionally been allocated the reference Regulation No. 185, paves the way for the potential large scale introduction of 'driverless' vehicles for use on public roads. Additionally, unlike virtually all other UN ECE Regulations relating to road vehicles, to implement the necessary safety and performance requirements for automated driving systems this new Regulation utilises a Safety Management System (SMS) and safety case approach which is more commonly used in the aerospace industry and the nuclear industry.

New UN ECE Regulation on Acceleration Control for Pedal Error Published
A new United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) Regulation on Acceleration Control for Pedal Error (ACPE) systems, UN ECE Regulation No. 175.00, came into force on May 12, 2025. This new Regulation, which applies to M1 category vehicles, specifies technical and performance requirements for Acceleration Control for Pedal Error (ACPE) systems which are designed to detect misapplication of the accelerator control by the driver and to control unintended acceleration of the vehicle.

Updates to UN ECE Regulation on Quiet Road Transport Vehicles Published
On January 10, 2025, an 02 Series of Amendments to UN ECE Regulation No. 138 on Quiet Road Transport Vehicles (QRTV) with regard to their reduced audibility came into force. The changes introduced by this 02 Series of Amendments are predominantly to address 'deficiencies' in the Regulation that have been identified during its application over the past few years. The amendments are intended to provide greater clarity of the applicable requirements and to ensure greater consistency in their application.
