NHTSA Proposes Revisions to FMVSS Regulations to Address Possible Introduction of Automated Driving Systems (ADS)

The rationale for many of the proposed actions is that removing/changing some of the requirements for vehicle manual controls would not affect the safety performance of ADS-equipped vehicles; however, the changes would remove unnecessary regulatory burdens and costs associated with a design to aid a person driving the vehicle. These actions are part of a larger NHTSA effort to address vehicle automation in the agency's regulations.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Seeks Input Regarding Drunk Driving Prevention

On December 15, 2025, NHTSA issued a Notice and a Request for Comment (FR Vol. 90 No. 238; NHTSA-2025-0259) specifically regarding Advanced Drunk Driving Prevention Technology Telltale Development. As required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, before seeking OMB approval, Federal agencies must solicit public comment on proposed collections of information.
