NHTSA is Seeking Additional Comments Regarding use of Cameras rather than Mirrors for Rear Visiblity

On October 10, 2019 (FR Vol. 84 No. 197) the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) (Docket No. NHTSA 2018 - 0021). NHTSA proposes to amend Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 – Rear Visibility to allow cameras in place of inside and outside mirrors.

This ANPRM builds on NHTSA's prior efforts to obtain supporting technical information, data and analysis on Camera Monitor Systems (CMS) so that NHTSA can determine whether these systems can provide the same level of safety as the rearview mirrors currently required under FMVSS No. 111.

NHTSA is requesting public comments to 21 specific questions and asks that commenters provide as much research, evidence, and/or objective data as possible to support their comments. This information will be used in determining the appropriate next steps.

Comments are due by December 9, 2019. The ANPRM is available on InterRegs.NET for our US Federal subscribers and is also available at www.selectregs.com.
