The Department of Atmospheric Environment and the Department of Laws and Standards of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment have recently revised and updated the Chinese standard on the limits and measurement methods for the noise emissions from motorcycles and mopeds.

Both Chinese Standard GB 4569-2005 on the limits and measurement methods for the noise emitted by stationary motorcycles and mopeds and Chinese Standard GB 16169-2005 on the limits and measurement methods for the noise emitted by accelerating motorcycles and mopeds have been replaced by an updated Chinese Standard amalgamating the two previous Standards into one; GB 4569-2026.

The amendments incorporated into this updated Chinese Standard are mainly to reduce the maximum permissible noise limits, update the technical requirements to reflect the latest developments in motorcycle and moped technology and to more closely align its requirements with the latest versions of the equivalent United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) Regulations on noise emissions from motorcycles and mopeds; UN ECE Regulation Nos. 9 and 41. The amendments included in this updated version of the Chinese Standard include:

  • Reduced noise level limits for most categories of motorcycle and moped.
  • The introduction of a new test procedure to measure noise emissions under constant speed running.
  • The introduction of new requirements on additional sound emission provisions.

Compliance with GB 4569-2026 becomes mandatory for all motorcycles and mopeds manufactured, imported, sold and registered from January 1, 2029.
