An updated version of the Chinese standard on electric vehicle traction battery safety requirements, GB 38031-2025, has recently been published. This updated version of the standard, which replaces the 2020 version, introduces numerous amendments to the requirements, including:
- The introduction of new requirements and a new test procedure on the repeated 'fast charging' of battery cells.
- The introduction of new requirements and new test procedures to cover impacts onto the bottom of the battery pack, battery system or complete vehicle.
- The introduction of revisions and updates to the requirements and related test procedures on vibration, mechanical shock, crash performance, crush resistance, humidity resistance, water immersion, thermal stability, temperature shock, salt spray, high altitude, over temperature protection, over current protection, overcharge protection, short circuit protection and over discharge protection.
Compliance with this updated standard becomes mandatory for new types of electric vehicle from July 1, 2026, and will become mandatory for all new electric vehicles from August 1, 2027.
