The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently increased its regulatory activity, with several rulemaking actions published in the Federal Register. Many of these updates are intended to modernise existing safety regulations by removing obsolete requirements, clarifying current standards, and aligning regulations with today's vehicle technologies.
Recent regulatory actions include:
- Part 585 – Phase-in Reporting Requirements (Final Rule): Effective July 6, 2026. Petitions for reconsideration were due July 20, 2026.
- FMVSS No. 307 – Fuel System Integrity of Hydrogen Vehicles (Final Rule): Establishes safety requirements for hydrogen-fueled vehicles, with mandatory compliance beginning September 1, 2028.
- FMVSS No. 305a – Electric-Powered Vehicles: Electric Powertrain Integrity: Introduces updated safety requirements for electric-powered vehicles, with mandatory applicability beginning September 1, 2027.
These actions reflect NHTSA's continued efforts to update the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) to address evolving vehicle technologies while improving regulatory clarity and consistency.
