At the 195th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) World Forum for the Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29), an 05 Series of Amendments to UN ECE Regulation No. 100 on specific requirements applicable to vehicles with an electric powertrain were adopted.
This new Series of Amendments introduces significant new requirements to address 'thermal propagation' within Rechargeable Electrical Energy Storage Systems (REESS), i.e. where a 'thermal runaway' occurs in one battery cell within the REESS and then propagates to adjacent cells.
Four alternative physical test methods to induce 'thermal runaway' in one battery cell and assess 'thermal propagation' within the REESS are introduced by the 05 Series of Amendments, and each of these physical test methods can be carried out at complete vehicle level, at a complete REESS level or at an REESS sub-system level, as appropriate.
Compliance with the 05 Series of Amendments to UN ECE Regulation No. 100 will become mandatory for new type approvals from September 1, 2027 and for all type approvals from September 1, 2029.
The 'draft' version of the05 Series of Amendments to UN ECE Regulation No. 100, as adopted by UN ECE WP.29, is available on InterRegs.NET for our ECE subscribers, and is also available at Selectregs.com.
