On April 6, 2021, a new EU Implementing Regulation laying down rules for the application of EU Regulation No. 2019/2144 on the type approval requirements for motor vehicles and their trailers, and systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
This new Regulation, EU Regulation No. 2021/535, specifies the technical specifications and type approval requirements for statutory plates, registration plate mounting space, windscreen wipers and washers, wheel guards, windscreen defrosting and demisting systems, towing devices, spray suppression systems, gear shift indicators, vehicle access, reversing motion, frontal protection systems, masses and dimensions and hydrogen fuel system components, effectively replacing the individual EU Regulations on these subjects that were repealed by (EU) 2019/2144.
The technical specifications specified in this new Implementing Regulation are predominantly carried over from the repealed EU Regulations, although the requirements on registration plate space have been expanded to cover both front and rear registration plates.
