NHTSA Updates Lighting Standard to Accommodate the Certification of Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) Head

On February 22,2022 NHTSA issued a Final Rule (FR) amending FMVSS 108 - Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment (Federal Register Vol. 87 No.35; Docket No. NHTSA-2022-0013) to permit the certification of adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlamps. The requirements adopted are intended to amend the lighting standard to permit this technology and establish performance requirements for ADB systems to ensure that they operate safely. These systems produce increased illumination without increasing glare, and have the potential to offer significant safety benefits in avoiding collisions with pedestrians, cyclists, and roadside objects. The effective date and compliance date for the amendments in this FR is February 22, 2022. Petitions for Reconsideration of this FR must be received by NHTSA not later than April 8, 2022.

This FR is available on InterRegs.NET for US Federal subscribers as well as at www.selectregs.com.
