The FMCSA Proposes Maximum Speed Limit Control for certain Commercial Vehicles

The FMCSA published an Advance Notice of Supplemental Proposed Rulemaking in the May 4, 2022 Federal Register (Volume 87, No. 86; FMCSA-2022-0004) indicating that the agency is preparing a Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (SNPRM) to revise 49CFR Part 393 Parts and Accessories Necessary for Safe Operation; Speed Limiting Devices. The revision will require commercial vehicles with an electronic engine control unit (ECU), are used for interstate commerce and have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross vehicle weight (GVW), whichever is greater, of 11,794kg or more (26,001lb or more) to limit maximum speed. This action follows an NPRM that was jointly issued by the FMCSA and the NHTSA on September 7, 2016. The advance notice requests comments on 12 specific questions by June 3, 2022.*
