Delay to the Enforcement Date for the New Australian Road Vehicle Standards Legislation Proposed

As detailed in the April Regulations Spotlight article, the Australian legislation regarding the importation and first provision of road vehicles was completely revamped recently with the publication of the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 and the supporting Road Vehicle Standards Rules 2019.

Within the Road Vehicle Standards Act, it was specified that the new requirements introduced by this Act would come into force with effect from December 10, 2019. However, following extensive consultation with industry, it has become clear that industry needs more time to transition to the new regulatory framework.

Therefore, on July 8, 2019, the Australian Government published a draft Bill amending the Road Vehicle Standards Act to delay its implementation date. The draft Bill proposes that the commencement date be delayed until a date to be fixed by a separate Proclamation, but no later than July 1, 2021.

The draft Bill is available on InterRegs.NET for our Australia subscribers and is also available at www.selectregs.com.
