The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is Raising MPG Requirements

The NHTSA published a Final Rule (May 2, 2022 Federal Register; NHTSA-2021-0053) that will require new passenger cars and light trucks to average an estimated 49 miles per gallon (MPG) of gasoline in 2026. These requirements will increase MPG by 8% per year for model years 2024 and 2025 and 10% in the 2026 model year. The NHTSA sets the fuel economy requirements and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) covers the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions requirements. The NHTSA officials indicated that the new requirements nearly match the EPA requirements adopted in December 2021. The effective date for the new requirements is July 1, 2022.

Since the new requirements were published on the UK Bank Holiday, they will be available on InterRegs .NET for US Federal subscribers, as well as at www.selectregs.com, as soon as possible.
